Hey Guys,

Tim, obviously your webcam is evidence that it's possible to get to the Internet from the lake.

Are you connected via DSL?

Is the service reliable? Would you trust your security system to it?

Frontier advertises 1-2 Mbps down, do they deliver?

Is Frontier the only game in town for DSL?

Anyone on here trying to connect to the wireless setup Granite is offering up?

Anyone had success with Internet via mobile phone providers?

The better connected I am to the Internet, the more time I'll be able to spend up there. Any help or advice is appreciated. :)

Thanks,

John

Hey John,

Yeah, the Skice Cam was running on dialup for over 6 years. I just hooked it up on DSL from Frontier a couple weeks ago - very sweeeet.

Frontier is still a little spotty on where they have DSL coverage around the lake, but from what I've heard you can get it if you're off of VV - and they just ran new lines down Old South Branch Rd. to about Spotted Fawn Tr. Normally you have to be within 2.7 miles of the local exchange building (which they have near the Trading post in Keshena), but with the new lines they're running, it's expanding.

The speed will vary based on how far you're away from the local exchange, and believe it or not weather will also affect DSL strength. Even if the speed isn't up to what you were hoping, it's WAY better than dialup - that has been the case for me.

About a week ago I heard ezwebtech/Granite is still testing out their system on the Lake - they were still having problems. The cost for mobile phone access for me would have been cost prohibitive. Another option I would have went with if not for Frontier's expanded coverage is www.wildblue.com . The cost would have been comparable to Frontier.

Thanks Tim. Conversations like this make me realize how SPOILED I am with Road Runner cable Internet. No lake here though. The latency of Satellite would negate running Vonage and remote desktop would likely drive me nuts waiting to see my mouse move. Here's hoping they run that super special new line down to the end of Spotted Fawn. Sounds to me like Keshena needs an internet cafe / bait shop

John, if you're off of Spotted Fawn, you probably are within range for DSL with 1+ Mbps down stream, the work they did on Old South Branch Rd should be setup by now. About 2-3 weeks ago I heard that about all they had to do is flip some switches.

The Internet Cafe idea is funny, it must be 6-7 years ago I proposed a similar idea to the LLPOA board. The Lodge would have been a great location/building and was within range for High Speed access. Unfortunately at that time there had been an unreceptive majority on the board…

GMTA :) Even if they just set up dsl and a decent wireless router we could take a laptop there and connect. That would add little physical security risk to the lodge and offer a nice service to the community. I'm sure demand is up from where it was 6-7 years ago. Maybe it's time to bring it up again.

oh, btw Tim, I tried to email tim@legendlake.org the other day, I believe from my hotmail account, and I got this nasty "we don't accept email from spammers" auto-reply. Blocking all hotmail users may be over doing it.

Yeah, they've had DSL at the Lodge for a while now, so all that would be needed is a Wireless-G router for about $50. The range would likely be enough for people to even have access right from their boat in front. :) Otherwise a range expander would extend it another couple hundred feet. Also, if they wanted to limit access, they could base it on the swipe cards that every LL'er is given.

I opened up the e-mail for hotmail, but their security is way too loose - have to see how goes for awhile…

Exactly!

I'll find out in about 3 weeks if I can get dsl. <fingers crossed>

Good luck with the hotmail. I was just suggesting if you're trying to sell something, folks need a way to get in contact with you. Maybe a web form with a captcha is a better solution.
