MCTA Annual Meeting 10-14-06 
Over the past year since our last annual meeting, the MCTA Board has
continued to address the growing concerns over state, local and school
district tax increases in our County. MCTA has and will continue to
call on support from our state legislators and the Governor’s
administration to provide some relief for the taxpayers
of Menominee County. This past year we have conducted several
initiatives including:
Asked our legislative representatives to push for an audit of
the Menominee Indian School District.
Encouraged the Governor to continue funding the County
Assistance Grant with an increase for inflation.
Multiple visits to Madison to educate legislators on the taxing
inequity that exists in Menominee County today.
Met with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction staff
to raise issues about school district funding, spending, student
performance, graduation and drop out rates and the unjustified
increases in the school tax levy.
Requested reports by both the State Legislative Council and
Fiscal Bureau on the current tax situation for the county.
In addition to these activities, the MCTA Board has been working with
our lobbyist and attorneys in Madison to look for new ways to secure
long term funding for theMenominee Indian School District.These efforts
involve discussions between MCTA, the State of Wisconsin and the
Menominee tribe when appropriate. In addition to funding issues, we
are dedicated to addressing the inefficient spending of school
district funds.Our goal is to bring more accountability and rational
budgeting to the Menominee Indian School district.
MCTA’s consultants have advised the Board not to discuss the details
of these efforts until we have completed our preliminary planning.We
do not want to jeopardize these efforts in any way. We can tell you
all that it is our hope these efforts will result in long term, secure
funding for the school district and a more efficient budgeting
process. Once these efforts are under way, we will advise MCTA members
and ask for your assistance in carrying out the plan.
