Minutes of 2008 Annual MCTA Meeting - Saturday, July 19, 2008
Outgoing president Marianne Pender opened meeting at Legend Lake Lodge at approximately 9:00 a.m. 40 members were present.
Management Team and Board Members present:
Marianne Pender, Karl Richter, Carol Weyenberg, Terry Brooks, Lois Roberts, Ginny Emon and Les Cater.
Marianne introduced management team and board members. She thanked outgoing members, Carol Weyenberg and Les Cater for their time of service.
Secretary’s Report. Carol Weyenberg stated that last year’s and 2008’s report can be found on our website. The group was asked if they had any questions on last year’s minutes. There were no questions and no discussion. Marianne reminded the members that the website was available for their information and reference.
Treasurer’s Report. Lois Roberts had handouts available for the membership on the current balance. She also reported on the voting results for the two open positions. Terry Brooks received 242 votes; Lisa Wilson received 247. There were three write-ins with one vote each. One voter abstained with one vote unreadable.
Lois explained to the membership that the board will elect its officers at their next meeting.
Marianne presented the Chairperson’s report. She explained that we continue to attend the school board and town/county board meetings to watch over spending and budget issues. She reported that there is not a lot going on in Madison with it being an election year. Jeff Mursau, an advocate of ours, is being opposed.
Dave Landwehr was introduced. Dave is a property owner on Legend Lake. He is leading an effort to formally protest the last assessment by getting as many people as possible to attend the open book session on July 25. Dave explained the process and emphasized that people had to fill out a form and either be at the session themselves, or send someone to represent them. A map that was distributed illustrated the inconsistency in which lake frontage was assessed. He answered questions from the floor.
Terry Brooks, along with Leslie Shawanokasic, the principal at the MISD high school, talked to the group on the Building Bridges Project, a group in which they are both involved. They explained the challenges that the group is up against, but also their successes and positive results. Their goal in speaking to the group was to provide information, but also to encourage participation.
Marianne introduced the key speaker, Beth Moses - the County Board Chairman. Beth explained her position and shared how the county’s budget has remained under the 2% limit. She explained the budget process and the various grants and contracts that the county was working on. Beth answered questions from the floor on what the tribe pays and does not pay. She explaind to the group that she feels the county has a good relationship with the tribe and that they work well together. Questions related to boating/water rules and the double standard in the county.
Les Cater reported on his satisfaction with the town/county board meetings. He explained that the meetings are run smoothly. Improvement was realized because members are now preparing themselves ahead of time to discuss the topics on the agenda - rather than wait until the evening of the meeting.
Marianne explained to the membership that she was leaving the presidency, but would remain on the management team.
Meeting adjourned at 9:50 a.m.
